It looks like we’ll be waiting a bit longer than expected for Lorde‘s third album, with the NZ singer-songwriter penning a note to her fans to explain a sad reason behind a recent delay.
In a note to fans, Lorde revealed her pet dog passed away recently, and the incident has interrupted her plans for a follow up to 2017’s Melodrama.
Earlier this year, she teased fans about her next release with a social post that said “third one in the oven.”
Now she’s written a heart-felt update on how things have been tracking, revealing her dog Pearl recently passed. Lorde adopted him in 2018.
“I’ve been working away on the new songs for most of this year in New Zealand… It’s been going pretty well, but something happened last month that I need to tell you about,” she started.
“Some of you may know about Pearl, my dog. Pearl came into my life in 2018, and almost immediately changed everything for me.”
She noted that Pearl was “instrumental” to the discovery and energy she was feeling while writing and putting together the next record.
“I felt he led me towards the ideas. And it’s going to take some time and recalibration, now that there’s no shepherd ahead of me, to see what the work is going to be.”
Lorde revealed that she’ll need some time to start to feel better, and to get in a position where she’s happy to finish the record.
“So I’m asking for your patience, as 2020 comes around and you start to wonder where the next record is,” she said. “I have lost my boy, and I need some time to see the good again, to finish making this for you.
“But when this great loss crystallises inside me, and my chest rebuilds around it, hopefully I’ll be able to finish up, and share it with you, and we’ll all grow together, as we always do.”
The majority of fans have been very understanding of the message, showing their love for the singer on twitter, where the hashtag #weloveyoulorde has been trending.
