West Australian singer Natalia has claimed she was pulled at the final hour as the opening act on the main stage of Mariah Carey‘s first Australian tour stop in Perth last night because she is a woman.
“Absolutely devistated that @MariahCarey has pulled me from her stage because I am female for tomorrow nights show! My Idol and inspiration,” she tweeted. She later added in a Facebook comment, “Thankyou very much to the Diva herself. Threatened by a Perth girl that nobody knows.”
The West Australian singer was originally scheduled to perform for VIP ticketholders at a function before the show and, due to scheduling reasons, said she was later bumped up to second opener on the main stage alongside Nathaniel. She made that announcement on Facebook last Friday, 31st October saying it was “a dream I have been chasing my whole life”.
In an interview with radio station 2DayFM, Natalia said that she was told the next day, “Sorry Nat it’s a no-go. She doesn’t want a female”. The singer said it was “heartbreaking” to be told from management “that your music is good enough to bump you up to that stage and then be told you can’t because you’re female.”
“People said, ‘she’s threatened’. She’s not threatened she was unbelievable last night but if she could have just looked me in the eyes and seen how devastated I has been, I was crushed.”
“No one is ever going to steal her limelight but she could have helped kick start something for me and my career,” she added. Natalia said there was no contract involved and that she was still able to perform for the VIP guests. Listen to the full interview below.
Mariah Carey and her Australian tour promotors have yet to comment on the claims. Carey is playing six dates in Australia on her Elusive Chanteuse world tour which has endured some rough patches and bad reviews throughout earlier tour dates in Asia.
This is Carey’s first Australian tour since 1998, when she visited off the back of her sixth studio album, Butterfly, the anniversary of which she has just celebrated. Australian ticket sales have so far disappointed, forcing Ticketek to slash ticket prices in a last minute flash sale to try and fill Australian stadiums.
