Metallica “Freeze Em All” During Live-Streamed Antarctica Gig

Metallica have boldly gone where no band… well, where only one other band has been before, with the metal luminaries playing a special live gig in Antarctica yesterday inside a dome on the helipad at Carlini Station, the Argentine base.

James Hetfield and company performed 10 of their iconic tracks, including Creeping Death, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Sad But True and Enter Sandman, for an audience made up of contest winners from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico, as well as some research scientists.

Speaking to Californian radio station 107.7 The Bone last month, guitarist Kirk Hammett said he expected the gig to be an interesting experience, albeit a cold one:

“We are playing Antarctica; it’s pretty wacky. It’s crazy, because I don’t deal with cold very well, so I have my reservations. But it should be pretty cool, because we’ve played the North Pole before — we’ve played Tuktoyaktuk, so we have to play the South Pole.”

The lucky punters were shipped to the isolated location on a cruise ship from Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago located off the southern tip of the South America, and all wore headphones to listen to the live set, as there was no amplification. The performance was live streamed in South America.

The only other outfit to perform on the continent is Nunatak, an indie rock band made up of research scientists and investigators who played for an audience on 17 in 2007. Check out some images from the Metallica concert below.
