Newtown Braces Itself For Inaugural Festival Week

The 2014 instalment of Sydney’s beloved Newtown Festival is nigh upon us and in order to get punters in the festival spirit, organisers have announced the first-ever Newtown Festival Week in the lead up to the November event.

Newtown Festival Week runs from Saturday, 1st November 1 until Sunday, 9th November when an expected 80,000 eager punters will descend upon Camperdown Memorial Rest Park for the festival day which will showcase a wide variety of Sydney’s best live music and entertainment

In the week up to the festival itself, Newtown Festival Week will see a stack of local businesses get involved by hosting events, gigs, workshops and week-long specials that showcase the unique nature of Newtown’s creative, energetic and diverse community.

Such events include Tranny Bingo held at King Street’s Coopers Hotel, nights of live music and tapas at Newtown’s Corridor Bar, a showcase of local music at The Town Hall Hotel and The Marlborough Hotel and a special Newtown Festival Edition of Snapback – a collaborative party that celebrates the best in female Hip Hop.

King Street’s Repressed Records will host a night of “Unfriendly Experimental Music”, featuring performances by Half High and Nic Warnock, while local bar The Midnight Special will play host to ex-Demolition High Style guitarist Gareth Ed Lindsay, who will swap his distortion pedal for an acoustic guitar for a night of “Outlaw Country”.

The festival is presented annually by the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, with a view to raising funds to support its work with the local community. The artist lineup for the 2014 festival day includes Deep Sea Arcade, Straight Arrows, Sleepmakeswaves, Bloods, Astronomy Class, and more.

Readers can view the full lineup below, and head over to the official Newtown Festival website for more information on the pre-festival weeklong activities.
