Northern Territory’s Barunga Festival Unveils 2017 Lineup

The Northern Territory’s beloved Barunga Festival is back for another year, today revealing a 2017 music lineup led by the likes of Missy Higgins, Skinnyfish Sound System, Justine Clarke and Coloured Stone.

Barunga Festival will return to its namesake town in the Katherine region this June, with over 4,000 people expected to turn out to watch a host of artists do their thing, including over 15 local acts like B2M and The Lonely Boysg.

“I had such an amazing experience at Barunga Festival when I attended a few years ago,” says Missy Higgins.

“I loved being immersed in the local culture and getting to see some really awesome bands from surrounding communities. I’m super excited to go back this time to be a part of the musical lineup.”

Barunga is seen as the birthplace of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s ‘Barunga Statement’, which went on to partly inspire the Yothu Yindi anthem ‘Treaty’. In turn, 65 per cent of Barunga Festival attendees are usually Indigenous Australians, and the event has become a crucial experience for both locals and travellers.

As always, this year’s festival will also feature traditional dance, spear throwing, didgeridoo (‘yidaki’) playing, weaving, damper making and storytelling.
