Perth’s Origin NYE Festival Is Now Without A Venue

WA punters have been delivered another blow by local councils, with organisers of Perth’s 2014 Origin NYE festival announcing that the City Of Perth have rejected their plans, forcing them to change their previously announced venue.

The 2014 instalment of Origin NYE was due to take place in East Perth’s Wellington Square this December, but according to The West Australian, the local council rejected plans for the event to be held at the stated venue, raising concerns about an “event of this size and nature” held on New Year’s Eve.

The council reportedly claims that WA Police and the Public Transport Authority opposed the event being held at Wellington Square because they would not be able to deal with public transport issues and antisocial or criminal behaviour at the festival.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi also raised concerns about limited parking and lack of easy access to public transport. She also said the issue was made worse because the promoter sold pre-release tickets to the festival before it had been officially approved.

Organisers addressed the situation in a brief post on their Facebook page. “So as you’ve probably all seen, the City of Perth in their infinite wisdom have decided to reject our NYE show. We will be working on a replacement venue and will be making a statement shortly,” it reads.

Last year’s event was held at Perth’s Ozone Reserve. Organisers this year said Wellington Square’s central location meant it would “be a breeze to get to and from Origin on a busy night”. The 2014 Origin NYE line-up features AlunaGeorge, Baauer, Nina Las Vegas and Danny Brown and more.

It was supposed to be headlined by Queens rapper Action Bronson but he announced earlier this year that he would, again, be cancelling all of his upcoming Australian tour dates, including his festival sets.
