Pixies Guitarist Joey Santiago Checks Into Rehab

The lead guitarist of American alt-rock outfit the Pixies has entered rehab for issues relating to drugs and alcohol.

The band made the announcement via Facebook, revealing that Joey Santiago will now spend at least 30 days in rehabilitation. As a result, the band been forced to cancel a live performance on Conan as well as a number of radio sessions ahead of the release of their new album Head Carrier.

“This is the best thing that Joey could have done, and we’re very proud that he’s taken this step,” reads the band’s statement. “We ask all of our fans to support Joey while he’s on this road to recovery.”

The band anticipate that Santiago will be well enough to head out on tour later this year – with Pixies also set to head down under in March 2017 for the Australian leg of their world tour.

“We fully intend to tour the UK and Europe this November and December, however Joey’s time in rehab will affect some of the our planned promotional activities to support the new album release.”

Pixies’ new album Head Carrier is due out September 30.
