Sydney Rapper Jackel Charged Over Alleged Assault At AM//PM Event

Sydney-based, New Zealand-born rapper Jackel has been charged over an alleged assault which left a woman with a facial laceration during an event run by Sydney-based emo party AM//PM last month.

The incident — which occurred at Sydney’s Burdekin Hotel in Darlinghurst during the early hours of Sunday, 29th July — allegedly involved a plastic cup being thrown at 22-year-old Lauren Cameron, who suffered a cut above her lip.

Jackel (real name Jessica Aitchison) has since been arrested, charged and released on bail over the incident.

Cameron tells Music Feeds that the cup was thrown from “about two metres away”.

“It hit the right side of my face, right above my top lip, and due to the force of impact it split open completely,” she says.

“After the incident, I was taken to RPA Hospital where I had plastic surgery to refuse my lip.”

In a statement, NSW Police said, “Following enquiries a woman was arrested at Surry Hills Police State just before 2pm on Wednesday, 8th August.

“The woman was charged with reckless wounding and granted bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, 6th September.”

A legal representative for Jackel had not returned a request for comment at the time of publication.

Cameron says she has not been contacted by Jackel or any of her representatives since the incident.

“There’s been no attempt at an apology or an explanation,” she says.

“Recovery sucks, I’m still struggling a little with limited use of my mouth and completely visible scarring and I’ll also be undergoing another surgery to correct the shaping.”

A representative for the Burdekin Hotel says Jackel has been banned from the venue, in line with its “venue safety procedures”.

“The Burdekin prides itself as a diverse and inclusive venue and the safety of our patrons is paramount, so our staff are equipped with skills and training to ensure in the rare instance that there is an incident, it is handled in an appropriate matter for all concerned,” they said.

A representative for AM//PM says promoters have been “working closely with the venue and relevant authorities to make sure this issue is handled appropriately through the proper legal channels”.
