The Avalanches Share New Single ‘Running Red Lights’

National electronic royalty, The Avalanches have shared a beautiful, summery new single ‘Running Red Lights’ with us today. The Melbourne duo returned just last month with ‘We Will Always Love You’.

There’s been a big hype up for these singles. It started with a clean-out of their Instagram page. There were billboards and a mysterious website leading up to the release of ‘We Will Always Love You’.

‘Running Red Lights’ premiered on triple j this morning. It features Weezer frontman, Rivers Cuomo as well as Pink Siifu.

The Avalanches said, “‘Running Red Lights’ didn’t start out as a defining moment; ‘a single’ as it were. But Rivers responded to our fuzzed out Spacemen 3 inspired jam with such open heartedness, that we soon dropped all pretense and got down to the heart of the matter… loss.”

“We love that wide eyed, elated, almost evangelical Los Angeles sense of possibility that he tapped into. He captures that feeling that comes on the other side of the abyss, when you have lost everything and so then, there is nothing more to lose.”

You can read the rest down below.

The loss they’re referring to is David Berman, who passed away in August last year. He was the frontman of Purple Mountains and his lyrics can be heard midway through the song, delivered by Pink Siifu.

“David had agreed to share his words with us for the middle 8 a few years back,” the group said.

“It’s a strange feeling releasing this now, 6 months after his passing, but we are so glad he got to hear the music, and it means a lot to us that he really liked it.”

“David wrote to me often through some dark, dark years and really pulled me through. “Running Red Lights” is about such times.”

The four year wait for the return following Wildflower is a relief, after The Avalanches left us hanging for 16 years following their debut album.

The new single comes with a video as well.
