The Smashing Pumpkins Unveil New Guitarist Following Global Search

The Smashing Pumpkins have officially bagged themselves a new guitarist. After throwing the door open to axe-slingers worldwide back in January and sifting through over 10,000 online applications, the grunge icons have just announced their pick for the big gig.

Asian-American guitarist Kiki Wong has gotten the official call-up, after first being named a finalist in the band’s online search and then slaying her live audition for them in LA last month. She replaces outgoing long-term member, Jeff Scroeder, as the band’s new touring guitarist.

Wong’s CV is impressive to say the least. Not only have her epic metal guitar covers netted her over 212K YouTube followers, she’s also performed as a live session guitarist for some of the world’s biggest acts including Usher, Bret Michaels and even Taylor Swift.

“Reviewing the work of these incredible musicians was a herculean, albeit worthy effort,” Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan said in a statement on social media.

“First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months. I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered – and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus. It’s definitely an exciting moment for The Smashing Pumpkins to be this busy with touring in 2024. We’ll see you all this summer!”

While in her own social media statement, Wong added: “It’s been an absolute wild ride, but I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen to perform alongside some of rock’s greatest and most influential musicians of all time.

“I never thought little ole 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment,” she continued. “It goes to show hard work and perseverance truly pays off if you’re willing to push through the tough stuff, so never lose hope out there. I am so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to share the stage with The legendary Smashing Pumpkins!”

Wong will join core Pumpkins members Corgan, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, plus touring members Jack Bates (bass) and Katie Cole (guitar, keys, vocals). Her first shows with the band will happen this June, when they set off across the UK and Europe alongside Weezer and Interpol.
