Listen: The XX Cover Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’

Remember that Wham Christmas tune that should have stayed in the 80s? Don’t get me wrong, it is one of my many guilty pleasures; however, Wham! are a group that fit with no other decade than the fleuro-filled era. Despite this, British indie outfit The XX have taken it upon themselves to rejuvenate the track to bring it up to modern standards.

In true XX form, the joy that is present within the 1984 release has been completely torn apart by the three-piece and has been replaced with the trademark vocals of the group. However, to their credit, they actually created a completely different song, unlike bands who previously covered it. Combining the guitar and synth sound, The XX have created a dark, yet enjoyable Christmas tune.

The track was recorded in a studio session, held by the BBC, and really brings out the true meaning behind the song. Anyway, give it a listen. It’s actually quite catchy.
