Thousands To Protest Lockout Laws At ‘Reclaim The Streets’ Festival In Sydney Today

Over 2000 people are expected to gather in the Sydney suburb of Newtown today, to protest the city’s controversial lockout laws, its Westconnex transport project, and to demand a more livable city as part of the latest Reclaim The Streets festival.

The free, family-friendly and eight-stage mobile protest festival will see over 30 local bands and DJs pumping out a variety of tunes as it makes its way down Newtown’s King Street after gathering in Camperdown Memorial Rest Park from 2pm this afternoon.

The previous Reclaim The Streets rally was held in September, and saw thousands of locals take to the streets of the Sydney CBD with banners and chants.

This time around, the protest continues to centre around a number of issues, including Sydney’s lockout laws, which currently lock punters out of clubs at 1.30am, close bottle-shops at 10pm and stop the service of alcohol after 3am.

Reclaim The Streets spokesperson James James says, “This protest is about who gets to use public space, and who gets a say in what a liveable city is.”

“The Lockout laws are another clear example of the NSW government putting their mates and donors ahead of sound policy.

“The Lockout Laws are a draconian measure enacted during a manufactured moral panic.”

Mr James says the New South Wales government is punishing “young people, musicians and DJs, and are funneling patrons out of areas marked for property development and into The Star [casino]”.

“The city should be more than just an investment portfolio for the super-rich, it’s our home too and we believe our Sydney should be affordable, open and supportive of everyone who works, lives or plays here,” he says.
