Twenty One Pilots Pay Tribute To “Big Influences” Coldplay

Twenty One Pilots paid tribute to Coldplay during their performance at iHeartRadio’s ALTer EGO at The Forum in Los Angeles over the weekend. The ALTer EGO lineup also included Imagine Dragons, Måneskin, Willow and Kings Of Leon, as well as Coldplay, who played just prior to Twenty One Pilots.

“Do you know how many people I texted to say, ‘I’m sorry, I’m busy watching Coldplay open up for me’?” said Twenty One Pilots vocalist Tyler Joseph. Joseph proceeded to tell a story illustrating how much Coldplay has meant to him and TOP drummer Josh Dun.

“Several years ago, Chris Martin called me on my cell phone,” said Joseph. “It was one of the coolest things anyone in the industry ever did. And I think up until that point, I hated everyone—except for Josh.

“But he called me and he left me a voice mail … and I listened to it; I remember where I was when I first heard the voice mail. He said, ‘Hey, it’s Chris Martin from Coldplay.’ He said, ‘From the band Coldplay.’ Like if he would’ve just said ‘Coldplay’ I wouldn’t have known what he meant.

“He said, ‘I just want you to know that I love your music.’”

Joseph made the speech after the band performed their 2015 hit, ‘Ride’, which included a brief snippet of Coldplay’s 2000 breakthrough single ‘Yellow’. He concluded the speech by saying: “Anyway, I wanted them to know that they’re big influences on us and it’s an honour to be playing on the same bill as them.”
