Wave Racer Announces First Headline Shows in Five Years, Shares New Single ‘What Are We Waiting For?’

In 2019, producer Tom Purcell – aka Wave Racer – returned after a four year absence with a glitchy, future-bass track called ‘AUTO’. Since then, he’s released a long string of singles over the past year or so, from Kwame team-up ‘Summer Rain’ to the heart-on-sleeve breakup cut ‘Left Behind’ last month.

Today, Purcell has shared another new track. This one’s titled ‘What Are We Waiting For?’, and veers a little away from the nostalgic tones and understated percussion of his last single. Instead, the instrumental cut is oriented around a hyperactive, noisy beat and a wall of sounds that move between shimmer and crunchy distortion.

Purcell says composing the track was an exercise in restraint and an exploration of sound design, limiting his sources to create something through process rather than materials. You can hear it in the track, too – there’s a lot of manipulation going on throughout.

In addition, the producer has announced his first two Australian headline shows since 2015’s tour in support of last EP Flash Drive. Joined by his full band, Wave Racer will perform at the Lansdowne in Sydney on Friday, 9th July, before a show at the Northcote in Melbourne on Thursday, 15th July.

Listen to ‘What Are We Waiting For?’ below. Tickets for the Sydney and Melbourne shows are on sale now.
