There’ll Be A Giant Inflatable ‘Sad Kanye’ At Splendour In The Grass This Year

UPDATE: Splendour In The Grass’ ‘Sad Kanye’ Prop Criticised: “Mental Illness Is No Joke”

ORIGINAL STORY: The ‘Sad Kanye‘ meme is still alive and thriving, so it’s heading to this year’s Splendour In The Grass as a giant inflatable version of the rapper’s head.

The team behind the 10-metre high version of Yeezy’s sullen face is the Barcelona-based art group Hungry Castle, who reckon Splendour-goers might be able to help Kanye lighten up.

“Why you got that resting bitch face, dog? Sometimes you crazy but you’re a dope ass producer and writer,” they say.

“We want to send you some love by blowing up your big head as a 10m tall inflatable sculpture. It’s going to travel around the world to Bestival, Splendour and god knows where to next. But what should we put inside to make you happy?”

What’s more, Hungry Castle have already shown off a smaller version of ‘Sad Kanye’ that they’ve been working on:

Hungry Castle were responsible for some of Splendour In The Grass’ previous inflatable art pieces, including 2015’s ‘Nicolas Cage In A Cage’ and 2014’s ‘Lionel Richie’s Head’.

Splendour has also announced its annual ‘Splendour In The Craft’ arts program today, of which ‘Sad Kanye’ will be the centrepiece.

The program will also include an installation by artist Craig Walsh, an Optical Oval installation of geometric designs in the Mix-Up tent, the return of ‘site-responsive painting’ and “an explosion of glitter and pipe-cleaners” at the Craft Mafia HQ.

The Grates’ Patience Hodgson and her mate Rachel Burke will also be running Fancy Free classes and offering café treats at the Splendour version of The Grates’ Brisbane venue SouthSide Tea Room.

Splendour In The Grass 2017 runs over three days in Byron Bay this July, and has already sold out. If you missed out on tickets but are still keen to head along, try the Splendour ticket resale facility.
