Lorde Topples Miley Cyrus To Rule Over Billboard Hot 100, Makes US TV Debut

The numbers for the recent round of Billboard’s Hot 100 have come in and Lorde has been crowned supreme ruler, crushing the competition with her international uber hit Royals and bumping Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball from pole position off yet another chart.

Royals also stepped over Katy Perry’s Roar to take out the top spot having spent 7 weeks in the Alternative Songs chart. The pop sensation has also trumped international heavyweights such as Robin Thicke, Avicci, Lady Gaga, J.T and Jay Z.

As far as international charts go, Billboard’s Hot 100 is about as accurate as it gets, calculating not just sales measured by Nielsen Soundscan but also radio airplay, audience impressions as per Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems as well as streaming activity data. Across all 3, Royals has seen a 22% increase, raising its hits to 128 million through all formats.

The track has shifted a crazy 294,000 digital units and clocked up to 6.1 million U.S. streams, a 12% increase in the past 2 weeks. Further lending credibility is that the track has topped the rock charts for five weeks.

Unfortunately, there’s no world record to see here folks. Lorde is neither the youngest to top the chart (that would be Stevie Wonder in 1963 with Fingertips – Part 2 at the age of 13) nor the youngest female (Peggy March reached #1 with her song I Will Follow Him, also in 1963, at the age of 15).

Miley Cyrus may have been gracious in defeat (though her fans were not) when she had to hand over the iTunes charts top spot to the Kiwi youngster, but we’re guessing she’s starting to feel the heat now that Royals has knocked Wrecking Ball from its perch in the Hot 100, where it sat for just a couple of weeks.

Lorde will soon be bringing her international chart topping vibe to a stage near you for her upcoming run of headlining Australian tour dates.

Lorde also made it to the stages of Jimmy Fallon’s late night program for her US TV debut just the other night. You can catch her performance of Royals and, as a web-only bonus, her album track White Teeth Teens below.
