The song from her 2012 record Born To Die: The Paradise Edition features the lyric, “Harvey’s in the sky with diamonds/And it’s making me crazy/All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby.”
People started talking about the song again recently in light of Harvey Weinstein’s recent demise due to a myriad of sexual assault allegations and now Del Rey has finally addressed the song.
“When I wrote that song, I suppose I had a Harvey Weinstein / Harry Winston-type of character in mind,” she admitted.
She further explained that she, “envisioned, like, a benevolent, diamond-bestowing-upon-starlets visual, like a Citizen Kane or something.”
While she thought it was, “funny at the time,” she’s now changed her tune saying that it’s, “really sad now.”
“I support the women who have come forward. I think they’re really brave for doing that.”
One woman who has come forward with abuse claims is Australian singer Natalie Mendoza who said she was groped by Weinstein in the ’90s while filming the movie The Great Raid. She told Weinstein at the time she would, “punch him if he didn’t take his hands off me”.
With stories like these in mind Del Rey has decided that ‘Cola’ will no longer be apart of her live sets. She said retiring it, “would be the only right thing to do.”
‘Cola’ hasn’t been played in any of her live sets this year, although it was a regular part of her live set before this year.
Lana Del Rey will be in the country next year for her first Australian tour since 2012 and you can expect that ‘Cola’ won’t be in the set.
