Ex-Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning has today dropped Battleships, the first single from his long-awaited second solo album, Departures. This is the first we’ve heard from the Aussie rock icon since Powderfinger’s last effort, 2009’s Golden Rule and their 2011 song I’m On Your Side.
Battleships isn’t exactly new territory for Fanning, mashing up the sound of latter-day ‘Finger with the pop sensibilities of his first solo smash, 2005’s Tea & Sympathy, which spawned the mega-hit Wish You Well. The new single does, however, come with an added dash of melancholy and just enough surprise falsetto to sink our battleship of expectation. If you’re a fan of the sound of Brisbane’s favourite son, this track isn’t going to disappoint.
