The Midway Report: Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of 2016

UPDATE 29/01/17: Here’s the full wrap of the triple J Hottest 200 of 2016

UPDATE: The winner of triple j‘s Hottest 100 of 2016 has been announced.

ORIGINAL STORY: Triple j‘s Hottest 100 of 2016 is halfway done, and there’s already a bunch of juicy stats, milestones and surprises to discuss.

Triple j has already confirmed that this year’s Hottest 100 features the most Aussie tracks in the countdown’s history, and so far we’ve seen 32 Aussie songs feature in the first 50.

Of the Aussies, Violent Soho lead the way with four songs in the first half of the countdown (they’re the first act to do so, ever), while The Amity Affliction have three. SAFIA, Dope Lemon and The Avalanches all have two songs a piece.

The Avalanches have also ended their 15-year Hottest 100 drought with ‘Subways’ at #91 and ‘Because I’m Me’ at #75, giving them the record for the longest gap between Hottest 100 appearances; they last appeared back in 2001.

Former Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian has made his Hottest 100 debut, thanks to his feature on Paces’ Like A Version cover of L D R U’s ‘Keeping Score’. The cover has come in at #56.

Justin Bieber has also made his Hottest 100 debut (kind of), thanks to Halsey’s Like A Version cover of ‘Love Yourself’, which has come in at #52.

As far as international acts go, Beyoncé has made her Hottest 100 debut with ‘Hold Up’ at #66, while Rihanna has already appeared twice — on Kanye West’s ‘Famous’ and Drake’s ‘Too Good’.

So far, the most-played songs by international acts are by Glass Animals, Frank Ocean and Catfish And The Bottlemen, who all have two tracks a piece.

Radiohead have also become the only band to have appeared the first annual Hottest 100 and the latest Hottest 100, with their 2016 single ‘Burn The Witch’.

Experts are tipping Flume, Amy Shark and Tash Sultana to grab this year’s top three Hottest 100 spots, but there’s no outright favourite.
