Johnny Marr Responds To Smiths Reunion Rumours: “Nigel Farage On Guitar”

Like clockwork, the rumour mill surrounding a Smiths reunion is apparently upon us once again.

As NME reports, a fan has taken to Twitter to asked former guitarist Johnny Marr about the possibility of a reunion, including a screenshot of a recent fan forum post which claims that a reunion between Marr and former Smiths frontman Morrissey is “closer than ever to becoming a reality.”

In response, Marr replied both succinctly and with tongue in cheek – “Nigel Farage on guitar” – referencing the hard right-wing politician who has served as leader of both the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and Brexit Party in the past.

One could, perhaps, read Marr’s nod to the ultra-conservative Farage as a dig at his former bandmate Morrissey, who has come under fire in recent years for his blatant, vocal support of far-right political party For Britain, along with throwing his support behind Brexit and Farage in 2016.

As NME points out, back in 2016, when Marr was questioned about Moz’s beliefs and whether the clash would prove a drawback in terms of reunion hopes, he admitted that the pair “probably don’t have much ideologically in common any more.”

“If it is the case that he’s pro-Farage, then there would be a slight drawback in that I think, as anyone can imagine,” added Marr.

The Smiths originally broke up back in 1987, and have never reunited.
