Music Feeds Podcast Episode #120: Mariachi El Bronx

Ahead of their third self-titled album, and with a 2015 Australian tour all booked, Mariachi El Bronx‘s main amigo Matt Caughthran caught up with Music Feeds’ Mike Hohnen to talk about new record Mariachi El Bronx III.

Caughthran seems calm, speaking in a relaxed tone although Mariachi El Bronx III is only days away from release. As the frontman tell us, this is hardly his first go around, singing as both a member of The Bronx and Mariachi El Bronx. He adds that the new album isn’t exactly new to the band either.

“It’s been a part of my everyday life for the last two years,” a chilled Caughthran explains. “So it’s business as usual, you know what I mean? I’m super excited but it’s like we just keep working.”

As for what fans can expect from Mariachi El Bronx’s from their third LP, Caughthran says the band took the record as an opportunity to challenge themselves and expand on their take of mariachi music.

“The third record is all about progression for me,” reveals Caughthran. “It’s a record for a band at a time when the band needs to kind of up the ante, take some chances and that’s what we wanted to do.”

Listeners should also prepare themselves for what the El Bronx singer describes as lyrically the “the darkest record we’ve ever written.” Encouraged by his bandmates not to sugarcoat any emotions or themes, Caughthran says the album has “almost like a fucking voodoo exorcism type of vibe to it.”

The good news for us folks Down Under is that Mariachi El Bronx will be in Australia next year for Bluesfest 2015 while also playing their own headlining sideshows. On what keeps bringing the band back to Australia, Caughthran reckons our audiences just get the band.

“We love it. It’s always been good for us. Show-wise it’s amazing,” praises Caughthran .”It’s just a place for us that is a fun, awesome escape … It’s just always been a place that understands us.”

Mariachi El Bronx III is due out Friday, 7th November. Check out the full interview, and Bluesfest sideshow details, below
