5 Seconds Of Summer have been (perhaps ironically) copping some heat over their new track, She’s Kinda Hot, after My Chemical Romance fans pointed out that it sounds strangely similar to My Chem’s single, Teenagers, off their irrefutably fabulous 2006 album The Black Parade.
As mash-ups of the two songs have begun popping up online to demonstrate their eerie musical similarities, the Sydney pop punk act have addressed the issue on the red carpet at the Teen Choice Awards, arguing that the comparisons are totally explainable.
“That’s just because of the 12-bar blues,” guitarist Michael Clifford says (via Billboard). “I think it might be in the same key as well”.
Also pretty much the same tempo, but who’s counting BPMs?
Clifford added: “People were like, ‘You guys should sound more like My Chemical Romance.’ Then we do sound like My Chemical Romance and people are like, ‘Why the fuck do you sound like My Chemical Romance?’ Ugh!”
She’s Kinda Hot is the first single off 5SOS’s new album Sounds Good Feels Good which is due to drop on October 23rd.
