Alt-J (∆) Announced First Ever Australian Tour October, 2012

British quartet Alt-J (∆) have announced that in just over a month the band will be visiting Australia for the first time for a two-stop tour in Sydney and Melbourne. The band with the unusual name has made an impressive impact with their debut record An Awesome Wave, which was released earlier this year.

An Awesome Wave earned the band rave reviews, with NME scoring the LP 8 out of 10 while hailing the band for their innovation: “The charm of Alt-J’s musical scatterbrain is that it works. On the surface, this is smart alt-pop, but Alt-J have messed with the formula just enough to make this a brilliantly disquieting debut. In refusing to submit to the rigours of a genre, they might just have made themselves masters of their own.”

Meanwhile, many have the band pegged for the celebrated Mercury Prize, with Gig Wise reporting that Alt-J (∆) has favourable odds with bookmakers Paddy Power. The idea of possibly being nominated, let alone walking away with the prize, has the band giddy with excitement. As keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton joked, “That would be it. I could leave the band with a Mercury nomination.”
