Dirty Three Announce 2024 Australian Tour, First Album In 12 Years

Dirty Three have announced a full-scale tour of Australia, marking the first time they have done so since 2012 as well as their first shows anywhere in Australia since 2019. The announcement comes after the band were announced as part of the 2024 RISING festivities in Melbourne just last month, where the tour will commence with two sold-out nights at the city’s Hamer Hall. A complete list of the band’s June 2024 tour dates across Australia can be found below.

The tour comes in support of the band’s freshly-announced 10th studio album, which is entitled Love Changes Everything. According to frontman violinist Warren Ellis, the album was recorded in five days (all three members live in different countries to one another), but took a year to finish mixing. The album follows up February 2012’s Toward the Low Sun, marking the longest gap between releases in the band’s history.

Its release coincides with the tour, being released physically on Friday June 14th for purchase at the shows on vinyl and CD before its release on streaming services two weeks later on Friday June 28th. The album can be both pre-ordered and pre-saved by clicking here.

Every song on Love Changes Everything is technically its title track, with the six songs only differentiated by Roman numerals suffixed to the end. The opening song, ‘Love Changes Everything I’, has been released today (April 2) to coincide with the album and tour announcement.

In a press statement regarding their upcoming shows, Ellis had this to say: “Nothing has changed. [We are] older, meaner, sadder and totally dangerous. Dirty Three are thirty-two years old. Come blow out the candles and help us stick a knife in the cake.”

Since the release of Toward the Low Sun, the three members have busied themselves with various projects. Ellis has made a further three albums as a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: 2013’s Push the Sky Away, 2016’s Skeleton Tree and 2019’s Ghosteen. A new Bad Seeds album, Wild God, is set for release in August 2024. Cave and Ellis also made the collaborative album Carnage together, releasing it in 2021 before touring it into 2022.

Drummer Jim White, meanwhile, released his debut solo album All Hits: Memories last Friday via Drag City. He has toured Australia with Xylouris White, Ed Kuepper and The Double in recent years. In 2021, he formed the supergroup Springtime with Gareth Liddiard and The Necks‘ Chris Abrahams. They released their eponymous debut album that year before touring together in early 2022.

As for guitarist Mick Turner, he has largely focused on his painting and his band Mess Esque. The latter released their self-titled debut album in 2021. More recently, he has collaborated with percussionist and composer Bree van Reyk for a series of improvised performances.
