FANGZ Just Turned One Of Their Biggest Punk Anthems Into An Emotional Acoustic Gut Punch

Look, we always knew FANGZ could write massive punk hooks.

What we perhaps didn’t expect was for the Sydney chaos merchants to suddenly hit us with a stripped-back acoustic track capable of emotionally clotheslining us on a random weekday. But here we are.

FANGZ – ‘Something Real’ Acoustic

Fresh off the success of their debut album Shui – which somehow managed to land at #1 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart while still sounding like it was made by five dudes who’d happily destroy a pub PA system for fun – FANGZ have today unveiled a stunning acoustic rendition of Something Real.

And honestly? It kind of rules.

Pulling the song away from the distortion and full-band chaos, the new version leans heavily into the emotional core of the track, pairing buoyant acoustic guitars and haunting string arrangements with one of frontman Josh Cottreau’s rawest vocal performances to date.

The result feels equal parts melancholic and weirdly hopeful – like the soundtrack to staring out a train window pretending your life is an A24 film.

“‘Something Real’ is about feeling completely lost in the noise of modern life and trying to find literally anything that still feels genuine,” Cottreau explained.

Naturally, the actual recording process behind the song is significantly less poetic.

“We only recorded it because we finished the album about eight hours early, and our producer, Tim, was trying to escape for his birthday and get to the pub,” he said. “We reminded him we’d paid for the whole day, so he pitched recording an acoustic version because it meant he barely had to set anything up before leaving.”

“So, naturally, the most emotionally vulnerable song we’ve ever released exists because a man wanted a schnitzel and a few birthday beers.”

Which honestly might be the most Australian punk-rock origin story imaginable.

The release continues the massive momentum surrounding Shui, which has cemented FANGZ as one of the country’s most exciting punk acts thanks to its mix of emotional honesty, shout-along hooks and unhinged energy.

The band will celebrate the release with a special one-off performance at Dead Set in Darlinghurst on June 19, performing stripped-back material alongside a full-band set spanning tracks from across their catalogue.

And yes, before you ask: this is still the same band whose singer holds the Guinness World Record for consuming 143 hard-boiled eggs in just over three minutes.

Art contains multitudes.
