LISTEN: Sydney Punk Maniacs FANGZ Unleash “Unhinged” Debut Album, ‘Shui’

After five years of carnage, chaos and some truly elite punk nonsense, Sydney misfit crew FANGZ have finally unleashed their long-awaited debut album, dubbed simply Shui (think about it).

Out now via Impressed Recordings, Shui is 11 tracks of snarling, sweaty, emotionally charged punk rock — all searing guitar leads, razor-sharp hooks and frontman Josh Cottreau’s trademark scream-your-heart-out vocals. From anthemic mosh fuel like ‘Anne Marie’ and ‘Wasting Time’, to the melodic gut-punch of ‘Wide Awake’, ‘Same Old Story’ and fresh heater ‘Bad News’, FANGZ’ first record swings between chaos and catharsis like a tour van gunning at warp speed.

FANGZ – ‘Bad News’

“A debut album’s always a bit unhinged — and FANGZ Shui has that energy,” Cottreau says. “We locked ourselves in a Melbourne studio, away from all distractions and comforts, and made something that sounds like what it felt like: loud, dangerous, evolutionary, drunk — and ultimately, ours.”

To celebrate, the band are hitting the road for their girthiest Aussie headline tour to date. They’ve already shared stages with the likes of FIDLAR, Pennywise, The Bronx and more — and now it’s FANGZ’s turn to bring the noise, front and centre.

The tour hits Dharawal/Wollongong tonight, before making pitstops stops in Mulubinba/Newcastle, Eora/Sydney, Yugambeh/Gold Coast, Meanjin/Brisbane, Gubbi Gubbi/Caloundra, Boorloo/Perth and Tarndayna/Adelaide.

Shui also arrives hot on the heels of an outrageously stacked 2024 for the Sydney band, who somehow managed to complete a full Australian East Coast tour in 24 hours, launch their own curated travelling festival ‘FANGZstock‘, create their own hot sauce ‘Fang us Some Sauce’, and crack the Guinness world record for the most hard-boiled eggs eaten in one sitting by Cottreau (143 eggs in three minutes and ten seconds, FYI).

To sweeten the deal, the band have also dropped a stack of limited-edition merch bundles to go along with the album — vinyl, tees, hoodies, hats, stubby holders, patches and, naturally, FANGZ-branded yo-yos.
