Homeground Returns To Sydney Opera House In November

Homeground is returning to the Sydney Opera House this November. Celebrating Australian and global indigenous culture, the free outdoor festival will include Deadly and AIR award winner Dan Sultan, whose 2014 album Blackbird is also up for Album of the Year at this year’s ARIA Awards.

Joining Sultan on the bill is Victorian music-maker Richard Frankland who will perform with bluesy folk larrikins The Charcoal Club. Known for their blend of hip-hop, reggae, blues and alternative roots, Canadian wife and husband combo Digging Roots will also bring some international flavour to proceedings.

Sydney Opera House Head of Indigenous Programming Rhoda Roberts says you “don’t have to be an expert on world music” to appreciate the talent on offer at Homeground, and encourages people to come along, dig the rhythms and relax.

“Homeground is dance and music from Australia’s heartland of first peoples,” explained Roberts, “with a smattering of global cultures that will spark your imagination and have you on your feet wanting more.” We can definitely dig.

After its successful debut in April this year, 2014’s second iteration of Homeground will take place on The Western Broadwalk, near the Sydney Opera House, Saturday, 22nd and Sunday, 23rd November as part of Corroboree Sydney.

The full program and details for Homeground will be announced Tuesday, 21st October.

UPDATE: 21/10/14

The full program for Homeground has been released. Joining previously announced acts Dan Sultan, Digging Roots, and Richard Frankland & The Charcoal Club is an assortment of local and international talent, including Badu Islander Chris Tamwoy, UK’s Breabach, and Victorian Benny Walker.

Along with the many musical acts on display, Homeground will be putting on dance performances from the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts (ACPA), the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA), and Fiji-based artistic movement group Rako.

There’ll also be some comedy relief thanks to Townsville standup and NSW Raw Comedy Final winner, Sean Chulbora.

Homeground is free to attend and will take place from Saturday, 22nd to Sunday, 23rd November 2014 along the Western Broadwalk located at the Sydney Opera House Sydney. Full event details below.
