A surefire sign that you’ve made some sort of impact as a rapper in the States is the emergence of a diss track and and even though Mullumbimby-born rapper Iggy Azalea is currently dominating the US charts, she hadn’t truly made it in the US until Californian MC Madd Mary laid down her brutal new cut, Eff Iggy.
The track and its accompanying NSFW video skilfully sledges Australia’s new favourite punching bag for being an “impudent child of wealth and white privilege”, capitalising and co-opting American black culture and heritage.
“When you claimed to be the realest it had me in stitches,” raps Mary. “You talk it, we live it, you moderately gifted mimic / Parasitic, synthetic, expressionless gimmick.” The lyrical takedown and its graphic video depicting Madd Mary stabbing and burning an effigy of Azalea has since gone viral.
Continuing the flame war on her Facebook page, Madd Mary has posted another video depicting a television news story reporting that “a massive manhunt” is underway for the California rapper who is “wanted in connection with the lyrical assassination of rapper Iggy Azalea.”
Azalea, who has been dragged into carpaccio-thin beef with everyone from Nicki Minaj to Lorde, hasn’t yet responded to the diss track. Her hit Fancy, meanwhile, just recorded a seventh week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, achieving one of the longest runs for a female artist this decade.
