Kendrick Lamar Unpacks To Pimp A Butterfly On New Podcast

The buzz of this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show is still hanging about, but it hasn’t stopped Kendrick Lamar from giving fans more to chomp on.

The Pulitzer Prize winning rapper features on The Big Hit Show, where he breaks down his critically acclaimed 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly. The podcast, a series from journalist Alex Pappademas, chronicles massive moments of success in music and pop culture, so it’s pretty fair that To Pimp A Butterfly would feature at some point.

In the trailer, which you can watch below, Lamar describes the ambition behind the album.

“It was me explaining my experiences and what emotions were brought up from that experience and tell them like, ‘Yo, it’s something bigger than Compton’.”

Guest appearances on the podcast (which will take place over a number of episodes) include George Clinton, Thundercat, Rapsody and Flying Lotus.

The first episode – available now – sees Lamar talking about the influence of artists like Clinton, who have been pioneers in their own right.

“Just being in there and seeing how much energy they had for the record, and I’m co-writing songs with these legends, you know that blew my mind. Seeing that they still have the energy and they’re not relaxed, they take the mask off, you know these is legends.” he says.

“And they’re just as humble and willing to work. It blew me away. It taught me a lot, you know. It taught me about really understanding the importance of the position that we in and to never lose that spark that we had when we first heard it. And them guys went in there, we sat, we laughed. I asked a bunch of questions about old stories that I’d probably never tell. And you know, I really understood the core of artistry and that’s to always feel like a kid while you doing it.”
