Mastodon’s New Album Sounds “A Little” Like The Bee Gees, Might Be Two Albums In One

Mastodon guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds says the band’s forthcoming seventh album will probably be a double album featuring a Bee Gees-esque album written by him and a separate record written by his bandmates Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher.

Speaking with Guitar World, Hinds says the follow-up to 2014’s Once More ‘Round The Sun will be a doozy.

“It’s shaping up to be a double album. One is an album I wrote myself and recorded with Brann and Troy during the Once More ‘Round The Sun sessions,” Hinds says.

“My part is called Cold Dark Place — it has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through. I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit.

“The other guys are writing another album, which I haven’t even heard yet, so I can’t tell you what it sounds like,” Hinds says, adding that he’s hoping to add “some noodly leads here and there” over his bandmates’ work.

Last year, Hinds said that he hates heavy metal and has been trying to get Mastodon change its ways for years.

“I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I fucking hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band,” he said, which might explain why he’s describing the band’s new album as “funky”, “ethereal” and Bee Gees-esque.

Earlier this month, Hinds’ new supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra — with current and former members of Alice In Chains, The Mars Volta, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Dethklok — unleashed its first single Crucifixion and announced its debut album.
