Mental As Anything Founder Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith Has Died, Aged 63

Very sad news today, as founding member of Mental As Anything, Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith, has passed away. He was 63 years old.

The band’s manager, Grant Bartlett, confirmed Smith’s death to AAP, saying that he suffered a heart attack while driving his car in Sydney.

Mental As Anything also released a statement, expressing their grief for the loss of Smith.

“It is with an incredibly heavy heart to announce that one of the founding members of Mental As Anything, Andrew Greedy Smith passed away last night,” the statement reads, via Sydney Morning Herald.

“Our grief and confusion at this time are little compared to what Andrew’s family will be feeling — our hearts and prayers go out to them.”

Smith co-founded the band back in 1976, and was still fronting the band as recently as Saturday when they performed a show in Tathra. They were scheduled to perform in Melbourne on Thursday.

Aside from being in the band and his other musical projects, Smith also had a regular feature on shows like ‘Countdown’ and ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’. Just last month, he was inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith will forever be a legend and a pioneer of contemporary Australian music. Vale.
