Mildlife Announce New Album, Share Video for New Single ‘Musica’

Melbourne-based outfit Mildlife have announced their third studio album, Chorus, due out in March 2024. The news is accompanied by a new single, ‘Musica’, which comes with a neo noir-inspired music video.

Mildlife have spent the last few years honing their psychedelic jazz fusion style. The band formed in 2013 and hit the mainstream with the release of their first record, Phase, in 2017. Phase picked up multiple gongs, including Best Electronic Act at 2018’s Music Victoria Awards.

The band’s next album, 2020’s Automatic, won the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album. Mildlife went two-for-two when their 2022 live LP, Live from South Channel Island, won the pointy sculpture for Best Jazz Album at last year’s ARIAs.

Chorus, the new record, is being touted as an evolution of the sound featured on Automatic and Phase. “Chorus is about a coming together of disparate elements. Not in some sort of utopian aesthetic where everything works perfectly, but in the natural flow and state of things,” said band member Jim Rindfleish in a statement.

As to ‘Musica’, the song has been described as an acknowledgement of guitarist Adam Halliwell’s Italian heritage. “When my Nona passed away, I realised I didn’t really know anything about my culture,” he says. “‘Musica’ started with ‘mi da la carica’, which means ‘gives me energy’. Some of the lyrics were written in Italian and then translated back to English a bit askew — almost like writing a song for Eurovision where the lyrics are not quite right”.

Listen to the song in full above, and get yourself ready for the release of Chorus on Friday, 1st March 2024.
