Nitida Atkinson and Esther Henderson work together under the name Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me! Along with a fondness for punctuation in band names, the duo share an affection for the timeless chart pop of Destiny’s Child and Britney Spears and the yacht rock earworms of Hall & Oates.
Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me!’s love of pop culture heroes of yesteryear extends to the silver screen, as evidenced by their new single, ‘Sandy’. The track sets its gaze on Sandy Olsson, the character immortalised by Olivia Newton-John in 1978’s Grease. ‘Sandy’ will be out everywhere on Wednesday, 8th November. We’re premiering it today – listen below.
Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me! – ‘Sandy’
“Sandy is a goddess,” Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me! said in a statement. “She can sing, she can swoon, she’s a bit boring and a bit daring, and she’s on the edge of breaking loose and making out with a big stupid stud. We bonded over our obsession with her and it feels so good to honour it in this track.”
While ‘Sandy’ is loaded with pop vocal hooks, it’s much looser and funkier than what you’d expect to find on contemporary pop radio, recalling the likes of ESG, Pylon and Saâda Bonaire. Stream it above and follow Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me! here.
