Rob Zombie has issued a lengthy apology and explanation for his cancelled performance at the recent RockFest event in Wisconsin. Zombie walked off stage 10 minutes into his headlining set, which he’s now explained was a result of losing his voice, sharing a photo of his tonsils online.
“I am very sorry to everyone who was at RockFest. Believe it or not this is the first time in 29 years I have not been able to finish a show,” writes Zombie on Facebook. “I have played through many many nights with a fucked voice. I knew it backstage but came out and tried anyway, but failed.”
“It is easy to say ‘man up and just do it’ but when no sound is coming out there is nothing you can do. If you have ever lost your voice before, then you know it doesn’t magically return just because you want it to. If there was a way to do the show I would have done it, as I have many times before.”
According to the Leader-Telegram, taking the stage in the late evening, Zombie, donned in full costume, left the stage after two songs, telling the crowd that his voice hurt and he didn’t want to give a subpar show. Over an hour after he left, a message was posted on the stage-side screens.
“Sorry, everybody,” the message read. “I wish my voice wasn’t so (sore). I knew from the second we started that it was impossible to get through the show.” Fans who’d stuck around loudly booed and punters who spoke to the Leader-Telegram expressed their disappointment with the rocker.
“As far as everyone yelling ‘I’ve been a fan for 20 years and now I fucking hate you! you pussy rockstar!’ What can I say fucking shitty stuff happens sometimes,” said Zombie in his statement. “I tried explaining it into the mic before I left the stage but I could barely croak out a word.”
Zombie concluded by expressing his regret at letting his fans down and insisting he had no choice this time. “I don’t take the fans for granted and I don’t take this situation lightly,” he wrote. “My goal is to never let the fans down, but on that night I did. Unfortunately I had no choice.”
