Sounds Australia has just announced a potential saving grace for Aussie artists scheduled to play the now cancelled SXSW Festival.
Just one week out from the festival, Alex the Astronaut, Ali Barter, Baker Boy, and Bakers Eddy were among a few of the artists whose SXSW plans were suddenly axed.
Without SXSW, it meant a lot of these artists had to call off their US tours altogether as they’d suddenly become undoable. You can learn a little bit more about the cancellation and what it meant here.
But now, Sounds Australia is coming to the rescue. It’s called ‘3 For The Stream’, a livestream event. Alex The Astronaut, Alice Skye, Cable Ties, Carla Geneve, Didirri and Kota Banks are lined up as a few of the 19 artists performing the inaugural event.
They’ll be performing across three stages in Melbourne over four hours. 3 For The Stream will kick off at 9am AEST on Friday, 20th March
On 3 For The Stream, Sounds Australia’s Digital Export Producer, Dom Alessio says, “Ever since I started with Sounds Australia in 2018, we’ve been discussing the idea of creating live streamed showcases as a way to reach an infinite number of music industry representatives and reduce our carbon footprint.”
“The unfortunate cancellation of SXSW provides a unique environment to put this model to the test. We’re living in extraordinary times and we want to ensure that even if Australian artists’ mobility is restricted, their music can still be experienced by industry and fans across the world.”

UPDATE 16/03/20:
Sounds Australia has announced the cancellation of Friday’s live-stream event, after a state of emergency was declared for Victoria. “We have decided that it would be irresponsible to proceed with our planned 3 For The Stream event in Melbourne this Friday, at a time when authorities are stressing the need for social distancing to stop the spread of the coronavirus,” said the organisation in a statement.
“The decision to cancel 3 For The Stream was not taken lightly. Now is not the time for an event that will bring people into close proximity. We need to work together to flatten the curve, to protect those who are most vulnerable to this virus. Everyone must do what needs to be done to ensure the impact of the coronavirus is limited as much as possible.
“Sounds Australia will continue to innovate and pivot to support Australian artists and industry as best we can in these unprecedented times.”
