The Buoys Challenge The Male Gaze On New Single ‘Subject A’

The Buoys have released a new single entitled ‘Subject A’, marking their second release of music in 2024 following the ballad ‘Guard My Heart’ in February. Both songs are expected to appear on the band’s as-yet-untitled debut studio album, which was recorded last year and is slated for release later in 2024.

In a press statement, the band explained that the “subject” in question for their “musical case study” is “the quintessential fuccboi”. “‘Subject A’ is a commentary on the male gaze, and the pressure to suppress yourself in order to be perceived as cool and attractive,” the band wrote. “The song celebrates all the things you now refuse to change about yourself in order to fit in to be seen as cool.”

To support the release of the single, the band have also shared an accompanying music video. The clip was filmed on a roadtrip to Melbourne, where the band performed at Laneway Festival as a last-minute addition alongside These New South WhalesDustCivic and The Belair Lip Bombs. It was directed by videographer and photographer Sam Brumby.

The Buoys – ‘Subject A’

The Buoys released their third EP, Unsolicited Advice For Your DIY Disaster, in October 2021. It featured the Sydney band’s breakthrough single ‘Lie To Me Again’ which went on to be voted in at number 88 in that year’s Hottest 100 and marked their debut in the countdown.

Following its release, the band released ‘Red Flags’ in July 2022, ‘I Want You’ in March 2023 and ‘Settle Petal’ in November 2023. The band also made their first collaborative single that year, entitled ‘Fight Back Time’, which saw them team up with Norweigan indie-rock artist Sløtface.
