Yungblud is the next artist to contribute two performances for the Spotify Singles series. Recorded at Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios, he delivered a cover and an original, keeping in stead with the session series’ format.
Paying tribute to Madonna, he delivered a blissful pop punk version of her smash single ‘Like A Virgin’, alongside a stripped down version of his own track ‘Mars’ – a David Bowie-referencing single that featured on his 2020 record weird!.
In the official press release, he explained his reasoning for choosing the famed Madonna single as his covered track.
“I wanted to take the classic, add some YUNGBLUD energy and shake it the f– up!” he said. “This is a song I heard growing up, my mum and my sisters used to play it all the time so that added real pressure to get it right!”
He also spoke on his stripped-back version of ‘Mars’, saying he owed it to his fans.
“It’s something that this song deserves, to exist in its purest form so the emotion can just radiate,” he said. “I have owed my fan base a version like this for a long time. I hope they love it!”
The Spotify Singles series has been running since 2016, and has heard sessions from Sir Elton John, Taylor Swift, Mac Miller, Jorja Smith, The Kid LAROI, and more.
