US chaos duo Joey Valence & Brae have taken on one of Australia’s most feral modern pub rock anthems and completely flipped it on its head.
Stopping by triple j’s Like A Version, the pair have delivered a wild, bass-heavy rework of Security by Amyl and the Sniffers, trading out the original’s gritty guitar punch for a synth-driven, dance-punk chaos that somehow still hits just as hard.
Joey Valence & Brae cover Amyl and the Sniffers’ ‘Security’ for Like A Version
It’s weird. It’s bouncy. It’s a little bit unhinged. And tbh? It kinda works.
Leaning right into the song’s raw energy, Joey Valence & Brae bounce lines back and forth while channeling the chaotic spirit of frontwoman Amy Taylor, but without trying to straight-up copy it. Instead, they crank the BPM, fatten the bass, and turn Security into something that feels just as at home in a club as it does in a sweaty pub.
Speaking about the cover, Brae said the choice was pretty much a no-brainer: “Just has so much energy. As soon as you hear it, you want to bounce off the wall… so we knew we had to cover that one,” he told the J’s.
He also shouted out Taylor directly, calling her “such a badass” and praising everything from her attitude to her iconic wardrobe, while Valence added that the original track’s magic comes from its raw, slightly imperfect feel – the kind of thing that “sounds glued together in a way that’s not manufactured.”
Which is exactly the vibe they’ve tapped into here.
Originally released in 2021 as part of Comfort To Me, Security has become one of Amyl And The Sniffers’ most recognisable tracks – all swagger, sweat and beautifully chaotic energy. And while this new version takes a hard left sonically, it keeps that same spirit intact… just with a lot more synth and a bit more bounce.
The cover lands off the back of Joey Valence & Brae’s recent Aussie headline run, which saw the duo bring their HYPERYOUTH tour through Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth last month, continuing to build their rep as one of the most unpredictable (and ridiculously fun) acts doing the rounds right now.
