Aussie crowds have taken to Chvrches like ducks to water, with the Scottish indie pop trio so popular Down Under that they’re heading back for this year’s Laneway Festival and a string of headlining shows, just 6 months after their maiden voyage to our shores.
Lauren Mayberry and Iain Cook from the outfit took the time to talk to our very own Mike Hohnen, giving us a call from their tour bus in San Francisco. The pair told us that they’ve found their crowd almost doubling after the release of their full-length studio album, The Bones Of What You Believe. “We’ve never really experienced anything like that before, so it’s very exciting,” Iain told us.
And Lauren says the fans have really gotten into the album because it’s all killer, no filler. “I think for us, it’s really great that people have responded so well because we took every song as seriously when we were writing it for the record. We didn’t really write, like, four of what we thought would be radio singles and then, like, a bunch of filler to go on.”
Chvrches have a strong Australian connection, with their Scottish manager being based in Sydney. And they’re itching to get back, although this time they plan on packing appropriately, with Iain telling us they were unprepared for Aussie winter on their last tour. “I’m looking forward to actually spending some time in Australia when the sun’s out because I kind of feel like we had the wrong impression of it when we went out in winter.”
Lauren adds, “I think The Laneway tour will be really fun because that’ll take us to different places that we haven’t been before.”
