Watch: Montaigne Tell Us About The Songs On Her New Album ‘Complex’

Montaigne’s brand new album Complex is out today. It’s an album that’s been three years in the making, the follow up to her 2016, debut album Glorious Heights. The album navigates through feelings of loneliness, isolation, and love. Each song reflects a different period from Montaigne’s life throughout the past few years.

To celebrate, we’ve been absolutely blessed with the opportunity to share these snippets into the creation of Complex. After sharing the stories behind three album tracks earlier this week, Montaigne has today shared three more stories behind the songs on ‘Complex’.

Complex

The title track from Complex is an absolute bop. Montaigne explains how the song just unfolded within a day.

“I’d been listening to ‘The Millionaire Waltz’ by Queen a lot at the time and was also into Twenty One Pilots so I was like let’s do a song like those two bands fused together!”

“What the song is to me now is, it’s this narrative about being in an ex-relationship with someone who subsequently becomes a cult leader… Which is not what actually happened. But in my mind it does fit into this weird historical moment I think where there’s… just extremism everywhere from both left and right, religious and non-religious people.”

Change

Montaigne explains the idea for this one came about when she was playing RocKwiz a few years ago. She explains she was thinking about change a lot and how she deals with change… and also showers.

“It’s kind of an eclectic little song that started there in the hotel room… A year and a half later I go into the studio with Tony Buchen and we finished the song after so long.”
