Tasmania’s winter festival Dark Mofo has announced its 2014 lineup, which will include appearances from The Bronx, SUNN O))), Earth, Veil of Darkness, David Lynch presents Chrysta Bell, Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! and Australian acts Total Control, Kirin J Callinan and HTRK.
Dark Mofo 2014 will also feature a large-scale public artwork by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer to light up the night sky (13th-22nd June); the City of Hobart Winter Feast (19th-21st June) at the waterfront with fire, music, and community; the ‘MONA till Midnight’ open museum event (17th June); the Future Hobart 2014: with Vito Acconci (17th June); the Dark Mofo Films program exposing the dark heart of Australian cinema (11th-22nd June) and after-hours debauchery at Dark Faux Mo (19th & 21st June).
The events will all build up to the longest night and winter solstice (8.51pm, 21st June) with the annual Nude Solstice Swim (sunrise: 7.42am, 22nd June) to welcome back the light.
Run by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Dark Mofo returns in June 2014 with large-scale public art, food, music, film, light and noise. MONA’s inaugural winter festival attracted more than 128,000 people to events across 10 days in Hobart last year.
Dark Mofo 2014 is shaping up to be even bigger, with events occupying historic and underutilised sites. Dark Mofo Creative Director Leigh Carmichael said: “We can’t wait for winter in Tasmania. This year Dark Mofo breaks new ground; working with the City of Hobart implementing the Creative Hobart Strategy, we will be activating spaces previously unused or underutilised, like the Town Hall Underground and Prince of Wales Battery, as well as establishing a new festival hub, in the historic Odeon Theatre.”
Dark Mofo cancelled its proposed Launceston leg last month, citing an “unsustainable business model” as the reason behind the cancellation. Dark Mofo 2014 will still take place on June 12th-22nd in and around Hobart, check out the details here, and the full 2014 lineup below.
