Hot Chip Frontman Announces 2017 Australian Solo Headlining Shows

Hot Chip frontman Alexis Taylor is heading down under for a handful of solo headlining shows.

The UK indietronica legend will be swapping out his band for a piano for the intimate performances in Melbourne and Sydney this October, for what’s being billed as a “heartstring-strumming” experience with “a deeply personal bent”.

Taylor will strip everything back to just piano and voice for a soulful recital of new songs, reinterpretations of his own writing, and “a selection of favourites both well-known and unheard before by other artists”.

He’ll be delivering four performances as part of Melbourne Festival’s 2017 music programme (two apiece on Thursday 12th and Saturday 14th October) as well as a just-announced one-night-only show at Sydney’s The Basement on Tuesday, 17th October with support from Sophie Hutchings.

The Hot Chip songwriter’s new Aussie shows come on the heels of his affecting 2016 piano-and-vocal solo album, Piano, which was inspired by the death of a close friend.

“The idea with this record was to choose songs of my own and others’ that were personal to me and to document live performances which were intimate and unadorned,” Taylor explains.

“I wanted to reduce everything to the barest elements, record a great piano well and do as little as possible to the recordings eq or effectswise. The mood created on the record is pretty different from that on other records I have been involved with. It feels like a special place to be able to go to.”
