Kacey Musgraves Shares First Single From New Album And Film

Kacey Musgraves is back with the new single, ‘star-crossed’. It’s the first taste of the Texan artist’s upcoming fifth album, also called Star-Crossed.

Musgraves’ new record – her first since 2018’s Golden Hour – will land on Friday, 10th September. She’ll be premiering a 50-minute Star-Crossed film on that same date via the Paramount+ streaming service.

Consequence of Sound reports that Star-Crossed was inspired by Musgraves’ divorce from singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly, which was finalised last September. In a statement, Musgraves describes the album as a “modern-day tragedy” sequenced across three acts.

Musgraves made the record with her Golden Hour collaborators Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian. Golden Hour won enormous critical praise from Pitchfork and Entertainment Weekly and went on to win multiple Grammy awards.

Bardia Zeinali directed the Star-Crossed film, which stars Musgraves and will include cameos from the likes of Eugene Levy and Princess Nokia. Zeinali, who has made videos for Troye Sivan, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Carly Rae Jepsen, said they “wanted it to feel cinematic and epic without compromising the heart and the emotion.”

‘star-crossed’ certainly represents these cinematic intentions. It begins as an instrumentally sparse and vocally intimate piece, gradually developing into something more wide-screen and atmospheric. It’s certainly not a run of the mill country song. Check it out below.
