Lorde has responded to Australian rapper Iggy Azalea‘s criticism of her performance at Nirvana‘s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. After the Kiwi singer fronted a performance of All Apologies at the ceremony, Azalea stated that she thought the collaboration was inappropriate.

“Nothing against her, but I think when you’re doing a tribute to someone that’s dead, generally it should be the person’s peer,” the Fancy rapper told Billboard earlier this month. “Lorde is not Kurt Cobain’s peer. No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don’t think it’s appropriate.”

Asked about her antipodean peer’s comments during an interview with the Herald Sun, Lorde once again displayed trademark maturity beyond her years. “I enjoyed it,” said the Team singer of her participation in the all-female-fronted performance. “I had a good time. That’s all that mattered.”

“I’ve been in a position where I’ve said something in an interview where I’ve thought: ‘Damn, I wish I could take that back,'” she added, offering Azalea the benefit of the doubt. “I don’t know how [Iggy] is feeling about it. But anyone who’s doing well deserves respect and I respect what she’s doing.”

Azalea did indeed hit out at the media shortly after the publication of the Billboard interview, taking to Twitter to write, “I consider Lorde my very talented friend. I find it ironic 2 girls tell the media they’re full of shit & weeks later supposedly I dislike her. My opinion on the makings of a touching musical tribute wasn’t meant as some back door way to take a dig at her or the performance she gave.”

“Sorry if it came across that way, it’s not what I intended & I feel genuinely bad about it because I still think Lorde is an awesome chick,” she continued. “And I just don’t want to world thinking I don’t support the girls, because I do!” The two previously supported one another after Lorde criticised Complex for publishing a negative review of Azalea’s debut after featuring her on their cover.
