Singer, songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright, already announced as part of the first round lineup for next year’s WOMADelaide festival, is set to announce an Australian headline tour for March 2015.
Music Feeds understands Wainwright will perform at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Wednesday 4th March, the State Theatre in Sydney on Monday 9th March and will also stop at Brisbane’s QPAC Concert Hall on Thursday 12th March, in addition to his WOMADelaide stop. Further dates are expected to be announced.
This will be Wainwright’s first headlining Australian shows since 2012, and follows a stint at Bluesfest in 2013 and various sideshows alongside the legendary Paul Simon. The tour comes on the back of this year’s greatest hits album, Vibrate: The Best Of Rufus Wainwright.
Rufus Wainwright is a central part of a very musically gifted dynasty which includes dad Loudon Wainwright III, mum Kate McGarrigle and his sister Martha Wainwright. Fans can expect an eclectic setlist at Rufus’ Australian shows, traversing Wainwright’s entire career, going back to 1998’s self-titled debut album.
His greatest hits album contains all of his best known tracks including his cover of Leonard Cohen‘s Hallelujah. The album also features a previously unreleased track Me and Liza, which details his relationship with Liza Minnelli, after reports surfaced she was not supportive of his tribute concerts to her mother, Judy Garland.
Supports for each of these Australian shows will be provided by another one of Rufus Wainwright’s talented sisters, Lucy Wainwright-Roche. Tickets will go on sale 9am Wednesday, 5th November. Full details are expected to be announced shortly.
