Watch Sampa The Great’s Breathtaking Performance At This Year’s Virtual Roots Picnic

Actual angel Sampa The Great has blessed us with footage of her incredible full performance at this year’s Roots Picnic.

The 13th annual music festival, masterminded by Philadelphia group The Roots and hosted by members Questlove and Black Thought, was held as a virtual event for the very first time this year thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic thwarting any chance of it happening IRL.

But still, Sampa delivered the goods. The Zambian-born, Australian-based artist stunned with a 15-minute set filled with heart, soul and effortless grace, including a fiery rendition of her brass-laced 2019 single ‘Final Form’ and a rousing rendition of the uplifting ‘Freedom’, preluded by a powerful spoken word tribute to Black lives and Black music.

It comes on the heels of her performance at Melbourne’s #BlackLivesMatter protest earlier this month.

“Haven’t performed with the crew in a min this was dope feels!” the artist – real name Sampa Tembo – wrote in the YouTube description of the Roots Picnic concert footage.

Appearing alongside her at the virtual event were of course festival heads The Roots, along with fellow musical superstars SZA, Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby, Kirk Franklin, H.E.R., G Herbo, Earthgang, Polo G, DJ D-Nice, Snoh Aalegra, and Musiq Soulchild.
