Elton John Australian Tour November 2012

Written by Mike Hohnen on July 20, 2012

I’m sure this news will make some people feel real old: it’s been 40 years since Elton John first released Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long Long Time). The single was released in 1972 and is one of those songs that never seemed to age. To celebrate the milestone, Elton John has announced a very brief run of tour dates through Australia.

John will be bringing with him his full band as well as all of his greatest hits. The timeless entertainer will be showcasing key tunes from all eras of his iconic career. At the time of its release, Rocket Man did better than any previous Elton John track, becoming a song ingrained in pop culture the world over; even if Family Guy didn’t spoof it, it would still be popular. The historical significance of the track is also hard to overlook. The song soundtracked the launch of Apollo 16. Astronaut André Kuipers in the International Space Station even played the track through the airwaves to celebrate the song turning 40, commenting on the event:

“This song has been an inspiration to many people who are interested in space, and especially those who wanted to become astronauts, including myself. It is certainly one of the most played songs here on the ISS, and we know it will accompany more astronauts into space in the future.”

The tour will kick off with John appearing at the brand new Perth Arena, then taking the band to Canberra Stadium before the finale in Sydney. This will make the performer’s 42nd appearance at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. This will be a rare chance to catch live one of the greatest musicians of our time.

Tickets for all shows go on sale Monday, 6th August, 9am (local time)
