Most fans wouldn’t normally associate Opeth with a night at the opera, but that’s all about to change – because the Swedish prog metal heroes are coming Down Under to play a gig at our most iconic opera-related venue.
They’ve announced a massive one-night-only performance at the Sydney Opera House, taking place on Monday, 6th February, 2017.
It’s all part of the epic celebrations planned to mark the release of their 12th studio album Sorceress on Friday, 20th September, with the band set to play a trio of unique, stand-alone shows at historic venues around the world.
As well as the Opera House, they’ll also be performing at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and London’s Wembley Arena.
The exclusive one-off Australian show will see the heavy musical alchemists play two epic sets – one packed with tunes from their new album, plus fan favourite cuts from their huge catalogue, and the other featuring material exclusively from their Deliverance [2002] & Damnation [2003] albums.
Opeth guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt says they’re pumped for it:
“These three shows will be completely unique in terms of songs, spanning over two separate set lists. We’ll pull out songs from our back catalogue and mix it up with newer stuff during the first set. The second set will consist of songs exclusively from the ‘Deliverance’/’Damnation’ records, that was just celebrated with a re-release combo package… So it’s a little bit of a celebration indeed! We’ll only play this setlist three times on the whole world tour, so if you miss it, you’ll have missed it. Of course, all other shows will be treated with the same amount of respect and we’ll chisel out a nice diverse setlist spanning over our entire career for every single show during the tours. We very much hope to see you there!”
