Tanzanian/Australian Songwriter Malaika Mfalme Copes With Grief On Heartfelt Debut Album ‘Yasmin’

London-born and raised across continents, Tanzanian/Australian songwriter Malaika Mfalme brings a cross-cultural perspective on their powerfully emotional debut album Yasmin, which was written “during a time of immense pain”. “While the world shut its doors and experienced the 2020 lockdowns, I was grieving my late partner,” the artist explains in a press statement. “When I began writing it, I didn’t know it would turn into an album. It was my means of coping through writing about grief, loss, and then joy, healing and finally self-acceptance. Now I feel this album can help others move through that kind of pain, removing the taboo and shame western society places on grief”.

You can stream ‘Yasmin’ in full below or catch Malaika Mfalme performing live at Sydney/Eora’s Red Rattler on Thursday, 14th December. For more new Australian music, check out our latest New Aus Music Playlist and make sure to follow the playlist on Spotify.
