Nearly two years removed from his departure, former Skegss bassist Toby Cregan has officially launched a new band. The trio, based on the Northern Rivers of NSW, are known simply as GREG – featuring Cregan on lead vocals and bass alongside two former members of Israeli Chicks, guitarist Zar Harper and drummer Louie O’Riordan. Their bio succinctly describes them as “three semi-washed-up rockers, having a crack for a thrill.”
This week saw the freshly-minted band release a new single, entitled ‘Think Less’. It follows on from ‘Subaru’, their debut single that was released towards the end of 2024 ahead of the band’s first ever shows in support of Dune Rats on their regional Australian tour. In a press statement, Cregan explained that the song came from merging two separate song ideas that he had been working on.
“It’s a love song to my dog Blaze, but also about a bully telling you what to do in a nasty way,” he said. “I guess it’s about home life being nice but work life being fucked.” The song’s accompanying music video features Cregan and Blaze spending quality time together, including going for walks, playing on the local football field and getting lunch at the pub. Cregan, who co-founded Skegss in 2014, announced his departure from the band in April of 2023. In a statement given at the time, Cregan said that leaving the band was “probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make”. “I just want to live a simpler, more wholesome life where I can spend more time with family, friends and my dog,” he said. “I am so grateful for everyone I have worked with over the years on this, and to everyone who has ever made it out to a gig.” Cregan’s final show with the band took place at that year’s Splendour In The Grass, with the set closing out on ‘New York, California’ – a song Cregan sang lead vocals on, which ultimately became his signature song.
Skegss have since continued on as a duo, with vocalist/guitarist Benny Reed and drummer Jonny Lani releasing their third album Pacific Highway Music in October of 2024. It featured the singles ‘Spaceman’, ‘Out Of My Head’ and ‘High Beaming’ – with the latter two charting at number 181 and number 143, respectively, in the 2024 triple j Hottest 200.
